Lazing kangaroos

How many kangaroos are there?

I’m used to having kangaroos around the place but, living in a relatively built-up area, they passed by at random and in ones and twos.

Not so at Shaggy Creek.

We have a mob of around 40 which pretty much lives here. On a good day, this mob is joined by others from the bush over the road and they party here together.

By party, I mean laze around together in Woodhenge or under the trees in the front paddock.

The roos aren’t bothered by our presence and come right up to the house. They hop along the back verandah which is at ground level. Quite rudely, they hop along the path between the end of the house and the water tank, banging on the wall as they go. Unfortunately, this is the bedroom wall and they’ve been known to wake us in the middle of the night.

Not content with taking up all our space and disturbing us in the middle of the night, they leave their calling cards everywhere; beside the car, on the verandah, on the path and all around the ground.

One day I found them dropped in a perfect circle – like a fairy circle – so I think they were messing with my mind.

2019 was a great breeding year and there are joeys doing zoomies wherever we look. I don’t think we need to worry about the kangaroo population dropping in the near future!
